I don't want to use 'plesiomorphy' and 'apomorphy' because people unfamiliar with the terminology won't be able to understand those unless I define them in every post. I could put them on my glossary, but I don't think that many people look at that. 'Primitive'/'advanced' is of course right out. I think I have used 'primitive' before, but I'm trying to stick with 'derived' and 'ancestral'. The word 'derived' should at least be familiar enough that most can determine the meaning by context.
