Anonymous comments.

Unless I hear an objection, I think I will close down the anonymous comments feature. I don’t get many comments on the blog in any case, but I find it frustrating when people are not confident enough in their statements to sign them. I also find it is used as an excuse for bombast at the expense of reasonable discussion.

Your views? (Let me guess — most of the responses will be anonymous?)

  1. I think that’s a good idea. Make people own up to their opinions – at least superficially. It’s not like they can’t just use some pseudonym and, if they want to be confusing, a link to somewhere random, if they want to avoid persecution.

  2. Well, I can’t enforce maturity at the source but I can delete any comments I like… 🙂

That is the exact reason why most people don’t take the time to comment on articles on the journals that allow you to do so (for example PLoS ONE).
Well, that, and taking the time to write something that “MUST” be flawless (according to them), because, as that comment will be forever related to their name, they think that if it is wrong, then people won’t respect them as much.

Anyway, I think it’s a great idea, and even though I don’t get comments at all in my new blog, I think I will do it myself.

  4. Had a feeling this was coming when you “suggested” that I sign my name.

    Oh well. Take care.

Hard to spell, is it? 😉

  6. OK by me. Even though I don’t use my full name always and everywhere, elsewhere I use a consistent nickname that is but an electronic fig-leaf.
